Tips or advice on what to take traveling?

i am planning on going traveling next year(mainly around america i think) +wondered if there were any tips or advice people would like to share with me please? thanksTips or advice on what to take traveling?
1) only take the bare essentials. if u r staying in motels and hotels then you should be able to wash your clothes. it will be a pain in the bum if you have to take a lot of stuff travelling everywhere with u!

2) make sure you don't run out of money. limit what you buy or how much you spend on trips

3) keep a third of you money in a bag, a third on you (in your wallet or pocket for instance) and a third in a hotel safe or room. that way if your wallet gets stolen, you still have most of your money left. do this for other valuables and credit cards too.

4) lock bags left in hotels or bags that are going in the aircraft storage with padlocks so people can't get into them.

5) make a rough schedule of where you are going to be at which time so people know where to contact you and you know where you are going. print off maps in advance too.

6) book any hotels and day trips in advance so you can be sure you will get a place, or you may turn up to find them full!

there are loads of others but most of them are common sense! hope you have a great time! Izzie xxxTips or advice on what to take traveling?
Plan ahead - There is no replacing good planning.

Becoming lost is probably the biggest nightmare for travelers. Before embarking on your trip, buy a travel book with maps. Carry with you a credit card, identification papers and enough money to get around the city in case you get lost.

Eat local cuisine - Eating can minimize travel stress! So, treat yourself to local foods and stay away from your usual staple of burger, spaghetti and cola. Be adventurous and have fun in local restaurants.
Work out what you are going to pack, pack it and then unpack it and take half out. Take only the basics. Last time I travelled I packed old underwear and socks and then after I wore them I just threw them out, I kept only a few new ones to wash. You could do the same with clothes, this way you will have room to pack things that you have bought on your journey. Don't look like a tourist as you will become a target. A lot of people buy new clothes to travel but someone once told me it's best to blend in and look like a local. Take things that have duel purposes like a sarong can be used like a dressing gown after taking a shower or like a towel on the beach to stop sand getting all over you.

Have fun and enjoy.
