Have a lot of patience, as it is in the nature of this breed to try it. When you give a command, the English Bulldog's first response is usually ';why should I?';. They will respond to treats, but do not expect a whole lot in the way of obedience from this breed.
although not the same, my american bulldog (male, 8mo) is sometimes a challenge to train. he is food motivated but surprisingly not 100 percent of the time, and yes, he does look at me like, why should I? He can be shy sometimes so we are working to socialize the heck out of him without overwhelming him. It took him a little while to learn house breaking but he's solid now. He's a huge lover and totally laid back but still goofy - love the bully breeds!
